Slovakia - introduction

Tatras and Fatras, High and Low

Slovakia is probably not anybody‘s first choice for a holiday, even if that body is a Slovakian. Slovakia is, most usually, a place that you might head to out of curiosity and possibly good, cheap beer. And even in this respect, Slovakians are aware that they are often overshadowed by their Northern Slavic brother The Czech Republic.

So what can you do in Slovakia? Have a lot of fun finding out the answer to that question!

The Lay of the Land

Slovakia is flat in the West and mountainous in most other places!

The flat west is due to the giant river Danube flows down the West edge of the country on its way from the Black Forest to the Black Sea. Throughout history it has carefully worn a wide flood plain through what must-have-been the hilly surroundings that make up much of the rest of Slovakia.

Through this guide, I will not cover all of the towns which are worth a visit, but have gone from West to East in a just few stops of a train. A journey that I think represents the most unique Slovakian experience.
